What Are Benefits of CBD Oil?
CBD - it seems to be the new buzz word in health, but what is it, and why?
Its official name is Cannabidiol and it is the dominant cannabinoid in hemp, and has many valuable and beneficial properties.
CBD is not new on the scene though. It was first discovered in the 1940s by Roger Adams, and in 1946 CBD began to be tested on lab animals.
Not many know that CBD is patented by the U.S. federal government.
I was shocked when I first heard this! You can actually look it up. It is patent (#6,630,507) titled CANNABINOIDS AS ANTIOXIDANTS AND NEUROPROTECTANTS, the U.S. federal government actually makes many impressive claims about CBD, stating that:
“Cannabinoids are potent antioxidants… they easily penetrate tissues giving them the ability to enter the central nervous system and brain.”
and pay attention to this:
“Non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD are particularly advantageous as they are non-toxic… and exhibit unique antioxidant properties without the undesirable effects of THC.”
and this as well
“The antioxidant strength of CBD is significantly greater than that of either Vitamin C or Vitamin E.”
So the United States government is fully aware of the benefits of CBD, so much so, that they own a patent on it! Are there any other benefits of CBD that have come to light over the years?
What are some other benefits of CBD?
CBD oils have been shown to offer a multitude of health benefits that could potentially improve the quality of life for people suffering from a wide range of health issues, physical and mental. I've gathered 5 common health benefits of CBD. These by no means cover every benefit of CBD.
Pain Relief Without Side Effects
It’s thought that CBD interacts with receptors in the brain and immune system to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Some studies, such as this investigation published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, identified that "...cannabinoids are ideal therapeutic agents in the treatment of inflammatory and neuropathic pain..." The best part is that CBD offered effective pain relief without inducing adverse side effects in patients.
Over the years, we have seen an increase in clinical research due to a number of high profile cases which have raised awareness of CBD’s anti-seizure properties. In fact, recent scientific discovery has confirmed the link between CBD and seizures. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine explored the effect of CBD medication on young adults with Dravet syndrome, a rare type of epilepsy with seizures that are often induced by fever. Those who received CBD experienced saw their seizure frequency drop by a median of 38.9 percent. This is an extremely exciting benefit of CBD and we can't wait to see how science continues to show more benefits as studies continue.
CBD not only helps many with physical symptoms, but has also shown to be effective with those experiencing mental health issues such as depression, PTSD and anxiety. A study by the University of São Paulo found that CBD significantly reduces subjective anxiety, leading investigators to conclude that “These results suggest that CBD reduces anxiety in [social anxiety disorder] and that this is related to its effects on activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas."
4. Fight Cancer
There are a number of different ways in which research had indicated that CBD may be valuable in the treatment of cancer. CBD, as well as some of the other compounds found in cannabis, have an antitumor effect. These compounds can inhibit tumor growth. In addition, investigations have shown that CBD can be used to stop the spread of cancer cells in cervical cancer cells. Exciting findings indeed!
It is important to note, however, that most CBD and cancer studies are pre-clinical. This means that they aren't conducted on human or even mammalian test subjects, and the findings – while promising – should not be construed as conclusive proof that CBD can cure cancer.
CBD oil is an incredibly valuable medicinal plant that can be used to help with a range of health conditions. What we have discussed so far doesn't even come close to an exhaustive list, it does highlight just a few of the ways CBD can potentially benefit your health. What do you use CBD for?
